SAMPLE WINNING ESSAY

Describe your motivation for pursuing your chosen degree. How does it fit with your long/short-term goals? How have your academic, career or life experiences prepare you for this program? What strengths will you bring and what knowledge and insights are you hoping to develop duringthis learning experience?

My working with ABC Company has many a times put me in a high pressure situation, which demanded presence of mind with optimal decision making ability while taking care of human   safety and systemic requirements. At times of shutdowns and other extra-ordinary activities, I had to take on leadership mantel and guide a team of engineers and supervisors towards timely completion of the job at hand. My education in engineering and school education from highly  renowned institutions have helped groom well rounded personality with broad understanding of  human nature and instincts and appreciation of individual priorities.

One instance when my conviction in my ideas yielded very good results was when our Butadiene plant was facing quality problem with formation of Dimer Polymers. Dimer is a polymer in which   two molecules of Butadiene combine to form an impurity. Acceptable level of this impurity is 100  ppm whereas what we were getting was more than 200 ppm. The process of trial and error, and experimentation continued for many days, but no solution was in sight. All through these days, I believed that solution lie in Methyl Acetylene (MA) monitor, and was pestering everybody regarding the same. But nobody believed in me, and maintained that MA levels must always remain below five.

Finally on my insistence, a quality circle was formed to closely monitor process parameters and formation of dimmers through the process. Also, I insisted on introducing higher level of MA as it should prevent formation of Dimer. This finally resulted in control over Dimer formation. My efforts and conviction were appreciated by my peers as well as my superiors.

Technical nature of my work and of my education has helped me obtain sufficient grasp of  technological developments and its impact on the work of organizations. Though my exposure   has been limited to petrochemical industry, broadening of perspective has definitely occurred   given the global scale of operations of which I have been part of. I have worked with one of the  India’s largest and Fortune 500 companies. In ABC Company Industries Limited, given the size and its stature, I have been exposed to the latest management and process tools. I have been part of TQM groups, Kaizen quality concepts, KRA Analysis, quality circles, project management  teams, and process optimizations. Continuous up-gradation of technology, debottlenecking, and improving the reliability of processes have been ongoing activities at ABC Company.

All these experience and exposures have given me deep insight into technology adaptation and  glitches associated with the same. My role as a part of Change Agent for Safety, Health and  Environment (CASHe) has given me confidence to initiate a change when necessary and ability to manage change. I believe my calling in life rests with Consultancy in Operations & Technology Management. On completion of my MBA from XYZ School of Management, I wish to take up a position in a global consultancy firm developing technology solutions for businesses. I wish to be part of technological developments and application of such development while smoothening human and organizational problems related to technology adaptation. I will try to obtain initial position in process implementation consultancy for petrochemical industry, as this is the area where most problems arise. After selection of technology, a company has to synchronize newly acquired process technology with the existing infrastructure. For example, the technology such as that of producing Propylene and Ethylene using Naphtha Cracking is becoming obsolete these days with more and more companies opting for Gas Cracking. When such changes are incorporated in the process, they require complete set-up and processes to undergo a major update. These are the areas where I see an opportunity for me.

In the long run, I wish to attain leadership position in my chosen area, with ability to drive an organization towards greater heights. I wish to develop into a change agent for technological   growth of industry, and improve the quality of work and life, enhance efficiency and productivity of  all the resources employed by the industry, and work towards creation of wealth for all the stakeholders. I see myself in the top echelon of the company I am employed with.

My goal as stated above, besides knowledge of available technologies and understanding of  technological change patterns, would require very deep understanding of various business  processes, including finance, marketing, human resources, operations and information systems. Interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding is very important, particularly so in consultancy, since none of the business processes can be carried out in isolation of other functions and activities. To make a process consistent with overall objectives of an organization, it is essential that each function operates in tandem with other. While my experience till date has equipped me with ability to acquire technological understanding continuously, formal education in consultancy and business management would be key to realization of my short-term career goal. And this is where XYZ School of Management becomes an ideal choice, with its exhaustive infrastructure, excellent faculty strength, and diverse students’ body. At XYZ, I intend to focus on holistic understanding of business. I believe that one must understand overall implication of one’s work in order to put effort in right direction. While working with technology, my learning at XYZ would go along way in helping me understand its implications on other aspects of business too. Besides conceptual coverage and practical exposure at XYZ, interaction with the faculty and peers in and out of the class would benefit me greatly in reaching out to my goal. I expect to gain from and contribute to diversity of student body and intensity of learning at XYZ in order to grow into an efficient and effective professional.
